Bedard's devastating jaw injury occurred back on January 3rd after taking a high hit from New Jersey's Brendan Smith after Smith caught Bedard with his head down while carrying the puck into the Devils' zone.
Following the injury announcement, the Chicago Blackhawks informed the media and fans that Bedard would miss approximately six weeks as a result of his injury. As it turns out, that was just the tip of the iceberg and the reality is much, much worse.
After already having missed nearly 3 weeks due to his injury, it would appear as though Bedard is behind schedule in his recovery. The latest announcement has Bedard still approximately 6 weeks away from returning to action.
This is dreadful news for the Blackhawks, their fans and NHL fans in general, who were hoping to get to see Bedard at the upcoming All-Star Game in Toronto. Unfortunately, he will not take part in the event and has been replaced by Winnipeg's Kyle Connor.
Bedard was well on his way to securing the Calder Trophy, awarded to the NHL's most outstanding rookie, prior to his injury. Bedard has amassed 33 points this season, including 15 goals, in 39 games. Tough break for the kid and tough break for the Hawks, though yet another high pick will certainly aid them in turning a corner in their rebuild.
