"There's lots of question marks surrounding the Toronto Maple Leafs heading into the NHL's Trade Deadline. What will they do with upcoming UFA's James van Riemsdyk and Tyler Bozak? What will they do with Matt Martin and Josh Leivo who've spent the last month in the press box? Will they add some defensive depth or help down the middle? While we'll have to wait for most of those answers, the majority of reporters have said general manager Lou Lamoriello would use JVR as his own rental. With absolutely no contract negotiations going on and a big market for wingers going into the deadline, head coach Mike Babcock made some surprising comments stating the sniper might actually be traded. "I don't think anything is an easy decision," Babcock said "We've talked about this a bunch, you always have this plan but your plan can always change.
"It depends on what people want. There's lots of times you're going through and not planning on doing anything and you end up doing something. We don't really know, in the end, what's available and what we could pursue either."Recently Babcock has mostly avoided all trade deadline questions, so it's very surprising to see him make such a statement. Babcock added, no matter what the team does, he believes Lou will make the best moves which will help the team. "The way I look at it is, instead of worrying about that stuff, you just keep playing good and give ourselves the best opportunity," he said. "Then, whatever is best for our team, Lou will do."
