When the Leafs signed Domi to a 1-year, $3M deal in July of last year, it was a happy homecoming for the 29-year-old as he grew up around the organization alongside his father Tie Domi.
It had been a lifelong dream for Max to wear a Leaf jersey and at his year-end media availability he stated that the goal was to get a long-term deal done to stay in Toronto. The Leafs also expressed interest in bringing Domi back and according to The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun the two sides have already held discussions about an extension.
LeBrun also noted that an extension could come in at 5 or 6 years and between $5M and $6M per season, which is obviously concerning, given the Leafs' current cap structure.
Various other reporters have indicated that Domi is likely willing to sacrifice some money for more security in a longer term deal as his last four contracts have been one or two-year deals. Additionally, the projected dollar value for Domi has ranged anywhere between $3M and $6M so LeBrun's guess is as good as anyone's as to where the dollar amount will land.
Domi got off to a very slow start in his first season as a Leaf, but found his game in the second half of the season. He finished with 9 goals and 47 points in 80 games for the Leafs while averaging just under 14 minutes per game.
Given the Jekyll and Hyde type season from Domi, it will be interesting to see just how high and how long the Leafs are willing to go to keep the former first-round pick.
