Initially reported by Jacob Stoller of The Hockey News, the Toronto Marlies have re-signed forward Robert Mastrosimone to the an AHL contract earlier today.

Drafted in the second round of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft with the 54th overall selection by the Detroit Red Wings, Mastrosimone enjoyed a relatively successful run with Boston University before a big farewell season with Arizona State University in 2022-23. In 83 contests with Boston University, Mastrosimone scored 50 points before tallying 42 points in just 38 games with Arizona State University.

When it came time for a contract, the Red Wings decided not to extend him and he walked into unrestricted free agency last summer before signing with the Marlies in late August. The 5'10 and 170 pound winger from East Islip, New York, scored 4 goals and 15 points in 45 contests for the Marlies last season.

The 23-year-old will look to bounce back and show off the scoring ability that earned him a 2nd round selection not too long ago. In his draft season, Mastrosimone scored 31 goals and 60 points in 54 contests for the Chicago Steel of the USHL before committing to Boston University in 2019-20 - a season eventually derailed by COVID-19.

As evidenced by Stoller's tweet, Mastrosimone earned himself an 84% game score in large part to his shooting, his ability to create chances, and a variety of analytical statistics like CF, CA, xGF, and xGA. His underlying numbers are fantastic and the hope is that he can eventually turn things around offensively as he carries a horrid 12% finishing.

If the Toronto Maple Leafs find themselves in a pickle during the regular season, Mastrosimone could earn himself a call-up just based on his underlying numbers. He would represent a cheap yet solid fourth line option but he will need to impress during training camp and at the start of the AHL season to be recognized.
