In the first period of the Leafs' 4-1 win over the Habs Saturday, Max Pacioretty fell awkwardly after being cross-checked and immediately grabbed the back of his leg.
Pacioretty appeared to be in a significant amount of pain, signaling to the bench for help before eventually hobbling back to it. He left the game at the next TV timeout with help from his teammates and did not return.
Following the game, head coach Craig Berube provided an update that wasn't overly positive before a pair of conflicting reports about the severity of the issue made the rounds on social media Sunday evening and Monday morning.
Ahead of Monday's practice, the Leafs provided clarity to Pacioretty's injury, placing him on injured reserve and listing him as week-to-week.
According to Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, Pacioretty's injury is a pulled hamstring, and while it is significant, it is better than initially thought by the Leafs.
Pacioretty's injury is surely unfortunate as he had been playing some very good hockey with John Tavares and William Nylander, but it does provide the Leafs a silver lining in that they will only have to make one roster move for the time being to activate Jani Hakanpaa off of LTIR instead of two.
Pacioretty joined the Leafs on a one-year, bonus laden deal following an impressive training camp. Through 13 games with the Leafs thus far, the 35-year-old has 2 goals and 6 points.
