David Ayres may have lost his Disney deal following allegations of abusive behaviour towards his now ex-wife
Back in February of 2020, then 42-year-old emergency backup goaltender and Toronto Marlies zamboni driver David Ayres made headlines when he came into a game for the Hurricanes against the Leafs and helped secure the victory for Carolina.
Following this win, Ayres was heavily celebrated and became an overnight sensation. He was the guest on a number of TV talk shows and even secured a deal with Disney, who were working on a movie to tell his story. Well, as fate would have it, Ayres may have lost that opportunity.
Earlier this year, Ayres' now ex-wife, Sarah Ayres, came forward to reveal that she had been subjected to years of abusive behaviour by her now ex-husband. These allegations came as a shock to most in the hockey community and, as a result, Ayres, who had become a bit of a celebrity, was now at risk of potentially being phased out. According to an unconfirmed rumour, Ayres has now lost his Disney deal.
Since these are allegations from an ex-wife towards her ex-husband, we shouldn't necessarily assume every word is true, but we should also be more amenable to believing the victim as well. The now former Mrs. Ayres was very descriptive in the types of emotional abuse that she claimed to have endured and we have yet to hear a response from Ayres himself denying those claims. He has also deleted/deactivated his Twitter account.
There is also an unconfirmed rumour that the now ex Mrs. Ayres may in fact be receiving a Netflix special as well. While the details of the special is not yet known, I'd imagine that it will be a piece to tell her story. I suppose we'll find out before too long.
