The Toronto chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association announced their 2018 Toronto Maple Leafs nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. The PHWA has nominated defenseman Roman Polak for the award this year. The Bill Masterton Trophy is awarded to the player that best demonstrates "qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey". Polak has fought his way back from brutal leg injury last year and returned just in time to sign with the Leafs and start the season. Many believed that Polak's career was almost done for after the injury, but he's played in 49 games so far this season and registered two goals and nine assists. The only Leaf to ever win the award was Jason Blake in 2007-08 after playing all 82 games despite being diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia.
