After securing the Rocket Richard Trophy and a Hart Trophy nomination, Matthews up for another major award
To step away from the subject of the Leafs' highly controversial Game 6 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning, thanks in large to suspect officiating, Leafs forward Auston Matthews received some good news on Friday with the announcement that he has been named a finalist for another major NHL award.
After scoring his way to a second consecutive Rocket Richard Trophy with the first 60-goal season in a decade and earning himself a nomination for the Hart Memorial Trophy, which is awarded to the player voted the NHL's MVP, Matthews has also been nominated for Ted Lindsay Award.
Matthews, along with Nashville's Roman Josi and Edmonton's Connor McDavid, were named as the 3 finalists for the award, which is given to the NHL's most outstanding player as voted on by their NHLPA peers.
Matthews' 60 goals and 106 points in 73 games put him on a 119-point pace, which would have been second only to the aforementioned McDavid, who posted 123 points this season for the Oilers. Josi notched 96 points in 80 games as a defenseman, becoming the first defenseman since Ray Bourque in 1993-94 to break 90 points in a single season.
