Mitch Marner's Post-Game Comments Suggest He's Not Aligned With Leafs Players, Staff
Mitch Marner's comments following the Leafs' loss to Vancouver on Saturday night suggest that he's not aligned with Craig Berube and some of his teammates.
Despite the Vancouver Canucks not landing in Toronto until noon on Saturday due to flight delays, they played a far better game than the Leafs.
Dennis Hildeby got the start over Joseph Woll and although he gave up a goal on the first shot he faced, the 6'7" rookie goalie gave the Leafs a chance to win.
Unfortunately, you can't win without scoring any goals, and the end result of last night's game was the Leafs' second shutout loss of the season.
Following the game, most of the Leafs admitted they were not good enough in any facet of their play with the effort level being the biggest concern.
Craig Berube and Chris Tanev were among those who spoke out publicly about the weak effort against the Canucks. When asked about the Leafs' effort, Marner, however, had a different perspective.
"I liked it. I thought we played well. I really did. In the last couple of games, we have been giving up plays to teams that aren't missing on them. I thought we were good and five-men tight in our zone. We went through the neutral zone as a unit. When we didn't do that, that is when breakdowns happened, and they generated a lot of offense out of it. That is what we need to be better at. We will look at it and fix it."
When his comments became public, Leafs fans were bewildered as to what game he was playing and watching, so one has to wonder what his teammates thought of those comments.
The Leafs will have a few days to reset as they don't return to action until Tuesday, but they have a lot to clean up ahead of the Dallas Stars' visit to Scotiabank Arena.
