Murray started in goal for the Buds in the season opener against Montreal, where he allowed four goals on 23 shots. The Leafs surrendered two goals late in the third and ultimately lost 4-3 that night, despite outshooting the Habs 32-23. Obviously, not the start to his career as a Leaf Murray wanted.
Since then, Ilya Samsonov has been very good in the Leafs net, posting 4 wins and a .920 save percentage in six games. As for the rookie Erik Kallgren, who was called up from the Marlies when Murray was injured, he has struggled at times. He has posted an .875 save percentage and is winless through three games. That said, this is not all on him. The team has not looked strong when playing in front of the rookie.
Getting Murray back in the net will be a welcome addition for the Maple Leafs. As of now, Kallgren has not proven he is capable of full time NHL duty, leaving Samsonov as seemingly the only competent option in net right now. When the Leafs acquired Murray, given his cap hit is nearly $4.7 million, it seems obvious the team was looking at him as the starting goalie. With so much going wrong in Leafs Nation right now, getting Murray back in the Leafs goal might be the positive news the team needs right now.
