The Boston Bruins reportedly refused to deal pending UFA Brad Marchand to the Maple Leafs, but were shockingly okay with sending him to Florida.

As the trade deadline passed, the Toronto Maple Leafs made two major moves: acquiring Scott Laughton from the Philadelphia Flyers and Boston Bruins defenseman Brandon Carlo.
One player that was on the Maple Leafs' radar who they never had the chance to trade for was none other than their longtime archrival, Brad Marchand.
In the end, Marchand was traded to another Atlantic Divison rival, the Florida Panthers. The official trade details, as per Frank Seravalli on X, are as follows:
"To #FlaPanthers:
Brad Marchand

To #NHLBruins:
Cond. 2027 2nd Round Pick*
* If Marchand plays in 25% or more of Florida's games over first two rounds of playoffs, pick becomes 2028 1st Round Pick."
According to Justin Bourne on X, Marchand seemed to have significant control over where he wanted to go:
"If Marchand went to FLA for what's essentially the Anthony Beauvillier return (a second, though it could become a 1st in 2028), it's clear he gave BOS a very small list of options of where he'd go, they wanted to do right by him, and that handed the leverage to Florida?"
Nick Kypreos also mentioned on Sportsnet's The Fan590 that Boston wouldn't even consider trading Marchand to Toronto at any point:
"I had heard that over the last few days that Boston would not trade him to the Leafs."
Though Marchand is currently injured and listed as week-to-week, he still has plenty left in the tank, as demonstrated by his inclusion in the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament for Canada and his regular season stats, where he has accumulated 47 points in 61 games so far .
While it would admittedly be strange to see Marchand wearing the Maple Leafs' crest, there's no denying his reputation as a playoff performer. He's the type of player you love to hate, but would gladly welcome on your team.
Kypreos elaborated on Boston's refusal to deal Marchand to the Leafs on Friday, stating that while the Bruins were okay with sending Carlo to their most-heated rival, the fanbase would have had a much different and more adverse reaction to seeing their captain dealt to the Leafs. Unfortunately, because of this, the Leafs were never really an option.
