Seguin took a shot from the slot and drove to the net looking for the rebound with Marner slightly in front of him. Marner was bumped into Ilya Samsonov and the puck proceeded to roll over Samsonov's shoulder and into the net. On the ice, the call was immediately waved off for goaltender interference, but of course, Dallas immediately challenged.
After a lengthy review, the call was overturned citing Marner being the one that caused the contact with Samsonov. "I don't know the rules anymore. I don't make them. It's complicated," said Marner of the decision post game. The league continues to just "spin the wheel" when it comes to reviewing goaltender interference penalties and once again, the Leafs were on the wrong end of one.
While the league said Marner was the one that caused the contact with Samsonov, if you watch the overhead replay, you can see Seguin pushing on Marner's back. You can also see him give Samsonov a bit of a shove with his right hand/stick. Regardless of how much contact was made between Seguin and Marner, it resulted in Marner making contact with Samsonov and pushing him into the net.
There are three things in life that are guaranteed, death, taxes and the NHL not having a clear and defined rule for goaltender interference.
