The Buds were locked in a 2-2 draw with the Habs late in the third period in a game that just felt like it was headed to overtime with about two and a half minutes remaining when Auston Matthews had his skate clipped by Canadiens forward Paul Byron.
Matthews took a hard spill and was completely taken out of the play, while Byron enjoyed a free skate into the Leafs zone and scored the game-winning goal a moment later.
I want to give the officials the benefit of the doubt here.. perhaps he saw the Canadiens defender collide with Matthews and assumed that the collision had knocked Matthews down. Maybe the referee simply didn't see the trip.
Then again, this is just another in a long line of missed infractions against the Leafs, but what else is new?
