It appears to be a two-team race between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the St. Louis Blues for Seattle Kraken defenseman Mark Giordano. Neither the Leafs nor the Blues are looking to spend a first rounder on a rental if they can help it and it appears as though Ron Francis is willing to negotiate the price for his captain.

NHL Insider Pierre LeBrun is speculating that perhaps two 2nd round picks or a 2nd and a prospect could be enough to pry the 2019 Norris Trophy winner out of the Pacific Northwest.

The Leafs currently have second rounders in each draft until 2024. Dubas has been adamant on not wanting to trade another 1st round pick for a rental. If he is willing to do a pair of second rounders or a 2nd rounder and a prospect, the Leafs would be the 4th Atlantic Division contender to make a significant deadline addition.

In terms of prospects, the Leafs are reluctant to move on from some of their best prospects but perhaps some of their b-tier prospects such as Roni Hirvonen or Mikhail Abramov could be enough to get Giordano.

The Kraken have a little over 24 hours left ahead of the deadline to trade Giordano and if teams aren't willing to pay their asking price, they'll have to lower their expectations to avoid losing him for nothing.
