Nothing about superstar center Auston Matthews is ordinary, and that's exacrly the message that the Toronto Maple Leafs wanted to send when they announced that Matthews has been named the NHL's first star of the month for December.

Matthews lit the league on fire in December, recording 10 goals and 4 assists for 14 points in just 7 games played prior to the season pause due to COVID-19.
Matthews headlined a very deserving cast, with Max Pacioretty landing in the 2nd star slot after recording 10 goals and 16 points in 12 games, and another fellow American in Thatcher Demko, who went 7-1-0 with a .946 save% through December, picking up a shutout along the way.
Matthews missed the first 3 games of the 2021-22 season after undergoing offseason wrist surgery this summer, and after a slow start to the season, the Arizona product has picked things up considerably, notching 33 points in 28 games so far this season.
The 24-year-old was held off the scoresheet last night in the Leafs' 6-0 win over against the Sens, but he'll have a chance to get back on the board on Wednesday against the Oilers.
