It's officially the end of an era in Chicago, as Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson announced on Thursday morning that the Hawks have no intention of bringing their captain back next season, meaning that Toews will become an unrestricted free agent this summer.
Toews has been the captain of the Blackhawks back in the summer of 2008. He captained the team to three Stanley Cup Championships in 2010, 2013 and 2015 and has won Conn Smythe (2009-10) and Selke (2012-13) Trophies. He won a Mark Messier Leadership Award (2014-15), was a 4-time NHL All-Star and in 2017-18, he was named on the NHL's 100 Greatest Players list (97th).
Toews sits 6th among Blackhawks all-time scoring leaders with 882 points, 6th in goals with 371, 8th in assists with 511 and 3rd all-time in game-winning goals with 69, behind only NHL legends Stan Mikita and Bobby Hull.
The longtime Hawks captain has battled illness and injury a lot during his career, but if he does opt to continue on elsewhere next season, it's going to be strange to see him in a different jersey.
