The move itself was the best scenario for the Leafs as they don't have to carry a cap hit for an additional season like they would if they had bought him out and they didn't have to include a sweetener in a trade to get rid of his contract. For Murray, he missed parts of three months with various injuries, but was available if needed against Florida in the playoffs, serving as Joseph Woll's backup.
The announcement came with a great deal of criticism and accusations of the Leafs attempting to circumvent the salary cap. However, we found out today that that's simply not the case. It was never the case.
As training camps opened with media availability on Wednesday, as well as team physicals and medicals, Brad Treliving updated Leafs Nation on Murray's injury status and the news did not sound good. Treliving revealed that Murray is expected to have a "significant" surgery next week and will provide a further update then. For now, however, it does not appear that Murray will be back on the ice any time soon and for everyone saying that the Leafs were circumventing the cap with Murray's help, well, I don't think he would voluntarily have a major surgery simply to help the Leafs circumvent the cap. Give your head a shake.
