At the time, Leafs Nation was feeling such an incredible high and a strong feeling of pure relief. Unfortunately, it didn't last long as the Leafs experienced one of the greatest collapses in hockey history, blowing the 3-goal lead and losing in overtime, with the game-winning goal coming off the blade of the stick of noted Leaf killer Patrice Bergeron. The Bruins ultimately would go on to the Stanley Cup Final, having their own collapse of sorts in Game 6 against Chicago, with the Blackhawks winning their second of three Cups in a 5-year span.
Why are we re-living this misery? Well, because Bruins goalie Linus Ullmark unveiled a new goalie mask this week that will act as a reminder of that fateful and heartbreaking Game 7. On the side of his mask, airbrushed into the side of a bear, Ullmark had Patrice Bergeron's celebration from his overtime goal against the Leafs on May 13th, 2013 captured and displayed for all to see.
While the portrait could be a bit of a tribute to one of the greatest moments of Bergeron's career to honour his retirement this off-season, how can it not also be viewed as a subtle shot at the Leafs? If it was about honouring Bergeron, why not simply use an image of him lifting his first and only Stanley Cup? I firmly believe that this was Ullmark's way of capturing the Original Six rivalry between the Bruins and the Leafs.
