John Tavares Reveals Why He Missed Canada's 4 Nations Face-Off Win Over Team USA

Team Canada is coming off of an electric 3-2 overtime win against Team USA, capturing the 4 Nations Face-Off title.

Mitch Marner had an incredible game against Team USA on Thursday, assisting on the tying goal by Sam Bennett and also setting up Connor McDavid for the game-winning goal in overtime. It was arguably the best performance of Marner's hockey career.

However, for another Toronto Maple Leaf, the night unfolded a little differently. And no, I'm not talking about Team USA captain Auston Matthews, who was spectacular in the loss, amassing two assist. I'm talking about John Tavares.

There has been plenty of speculation from fans and media alike that Tavares should of been named to Team Canada and was snubbed.

But apparently, it wasn't a big deal to Tavares. In fact, he didn't even finish watching the game.

As per Tavares himself on Instagram's Offside account:

Tavares has been part of a remarkable resurgence for the Toronto Maple Leafs this season. After a sluggish year in 2023-24, in which he appeared to have lost a step, he seems to have found the fountain of youth, amassing 45 points in 48 games at 34 years old.

While it must have been disappointing for Tavares not to represent his country, skipping the tournament may have actually worked in his favor, giving him more time to rest for the playoffs, and also continue his impressive season.

Though Tavares wasn't part of the 4 Nations Face-Off, the event was still a huge success for the sport. It brought nations together and created an incredible buzz for hockey as a whole, giving the NHL a real opportunity to grow the sport in an interesting way. Mission accomplished.
