It caught the hockey world by surprise earlier this week when the Boston Bruins fired head coach Bruce Cassidy. It was a move that nobody saw coming and now it appears as though the Bruins actually went back on their word.

According to a local Bruins reporter, Joe McDonald, two weeks ago during the Bruins' exit interviews, management told Bruce Cassidy that his job was safe. Today however, Cassidy met with Bruins media one last time where he said he was told the final year of his contract was going to be "status quo", indicating that there would be no major organizational changes coming into the last year of the deal.

It's an unfortunate change of heart from Bruins management and likely a decision made by GM Don Sweeney to save his own job. The good news for Cassidy though is that he has already been in contact with several teams this week to inquire about his services. There are multiple vacancies to be filled and a slew of high profile, successful coaches available, so it won't be surprising to see Cassidy back behind a bench next season. It will just be a matter of where he wants to go.
