On Thursday, the NHL announced a fine of $2000 against Michael Bunting for embellishment, which occurred on February 17th against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Being an agitator, or a self-proclaimed «greasy rat», it's essential to Bunting's game to pester the other team and lure them into taking penalties for the Maple Leafs' power play to capitalize on. On this play, however, Bunting may have taken that too far. Speaking today to David Alter of The Leafs Nation, Bunting addressed the alleged embellishment.

It is what it is. I just try to stay engaged every single night and play my game and get in people's faces. The League thought I embellished in that situation I can't change my game because I'm having success. I don't want to embellish, I don't want to be a diver any of that. I just have to stick with it and stick to my game.

As Bunting himself notes, his role as the Leafs' agitator has been incredibly successful. Technically a rookie, despite being 26 years old, Bunting has put up 35 points in 51 games. While his point production has been found money for the Leafs, his on ice presence perhaps brings even more value. His compete level is unparalleled to any other Leaf, and brings an infectious attitude to the team. Sheldon Keefe commented today on Bunting's role on the team, saying

He's usually the most hated guy on the ice.

The team and Bunting himself understand the unique value he provides to this roster as the most hated guy on the ice, and the success he's had has been found money for the Leafs. He'll continue to be the greasy rat he is, and tuck in quite a few goals on the side as well.
