Brad Treliving Makes Unscheduled Media Appearance to Address Mitch Marner Situation

Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving called an impromptu press conference on Sunday to discuss the discourse surrounding Mitch Marner and his future with the Leafs.
On Saturday, news broke that the pending free agent was asked to waive his no-movement clause as the Leafs attempted to land Mikko Rantanen from Carolina.
After the Leafs' third loss in a row, Marner bluntly addressed the media about the rumour before shooting down follow-up questions.
Due to the distraction the news had created and the questions it brought surrounding his future with the Leafs, Brad Treliving was compelled to call an impromptu press conference following Sunday's practice in Utah.
In speaking with reporters, Treliving doubled down on his comments from this past off-season and earlier this season about wanting to keep Marner in a Leaf jersey for a long time.
"We want Mitch here for a long time," said Treliving.
Treliving also noted that he didn't believe the news became a distraction, but wanted to clear the air so the media wouldn't turn it into one before disregarding any questions about contract negotiations.
"It's not a distraction," Treliving said. "But I said, we think the world of Mitch. But it's just not a question we're going to get into every day. We've dealt with it here. I'm not going to get into any questions - we talked about it the other day - with regards to contracts and the business side of it. We're not going to get into it other than (to say) we're aligned on this. We move forward. We want Mitch... So I just wanted to come and address you on it so you don't have to track me down, and we'll move on, OK?"
Treliving and the Leafs may have given all the power to Marner with the news from Saturday, but despite the Leafs' attempt to land Rantanen and move on from Marner, Treliving appears to be steadfast in working out an agreement to keep the 27-year-old with the Leafs for a long time.
