There is no arguing that Cale Makar is one of the best defensemen in the NHL. At just 23 years old, he is a Stanley Cup Champion, Conn Smythe and Norris Trophy winner and holds the number one spot for fantasy hockey defensemen rankings. However, there's another title he could achieve this upcoming season:
Last season, Makar had a career year, reaching 86 points. Only behind Nashville's Roman Josi, he was the defenseman with the second-highest amount of points in the entire NHL and currently has 180 points in 178 games played as he enters his fourth season in the league.
Now entering the second year of his six-year contract extension signed in 2021, it's safe to say the Avalanche are getting their money's worth with Makar so far and will continue to, given the pace he's going at.
The record for the fastest defenseman to reach 200 points in NHL history is held by Sergei Zubov, who reached that milestone in 207 games. Makar became the fastest defenseman to earn 100 points in the last 28 years, following a two-point night in late October last year. It took him 108 games to hit that milestone, only 20 more than Harry Cameron, who got there in 88 games.
Hockey fans are watching one of the greatest defensemen of this generation, and I don't think it's too far-fetched to believe Makar could hit 200 points over his next 28 games or fewer.
