Last weekend, Jeff Petry found himself traded back to Montreal as part of the Erik Karlsson trade as the Penguins and Kyle Dubas had to shed some salary in order to fit Karlsson's salary under the cap. From the moment the Habs re-acquired him, there had been rumours that the Habs would be flipping him at some point, with it likely being close to the deadline. That is not the case however as the Habs sent the 35-year-old to Detroit this afternoon.

The Habs sent the blueliner to Detroit in exchange for Gustav Lindstrom and a conditional 4th round pick in 2025. The Habs are retaining 50% of Petry's remaining salary (Pittsburgh retained 25%) which means the Wings only have a cap hit of $2.34M per season for the next two years. Lindstrom is a 24-year-old blueliner that was drafted in the second round of the 2017 draft by the Wings and is on a 1-year deal that will see him earn $950K for the upcoming season before becoming an RFA with arbitration rights. The Habs will also receive the later of the Bruins' or Wings' 4th round pick.

Petry is the fourth addition to the Wings' blueline this off-season as Steve Yzerman has also added Shayne Gostisbehere, Justin Holl and Olli Maatta to insulate their young stud Moritz Seider.
