It's easy to bag on the Coyotes for the way they've operated as a franchise. They often acquire dead LTIR contracts just to reach the salary cap floor. It seems the team is either flat broke, or have the cheapest ownership group the NHL has seen since Harold Ballard owned the Maple Leafs. That's why tonight's promotion from the Coyotes is so strange.
Before puck drop, every single one of the 5,000 seats at Mullet arena were draped with a brand new Coyotes Reverse Retro 2.0 jersey. The jerseys, which retail for $303.99 CAD apiece on the Fanatics website, are a burnt orange colour and feature the Coyotes "Kachina" head. The quick math tells us that the retail price of the giveaway would add up to a whopping $1,121,495.11 USD, enough to pay Mark Giordano's annual salary with enough change to pick up a new Lamborghini on the way to the rink.
It is definitely odd that the Coyotes would choose to spend so lavishly on a giveaway when the team has been unwilling to spend on a competitive roster for years.
