Deadline acquisition Ryan O'Reilly finally addresses his future in Toronto
On February 17th, Kyle Dubas sent a 2025 second round pick, 2023 first and third round picks, Adam Gaudette and Mikhail Abramov to St. Louis and a 4th round pick to Minnesota for Noel Acciari and Ryan O'Reilly in an attempt to add more leadership, depth, grit and physicality to the Leafs' forward group. Due to a broken finger, O'Reilly only skated in 13 of the Leafs' remaining regular season games, but he still managed to put up 11 points in those 13 games, including a hat trick against his former Buffalo Sabres.
Yesterday, O'Reilly joined TSN1050's OverDrive to discuss his time in Toronto and what his plans are for free agency. O'Reilly spoke in the past tense a lot when referring to his time in Toronto, but was also asked what his plans were for free agency. In response to that question, he said that he would take some time to figure things out with family and what he wants to do but also said, "I hope everything works out and we can get something done," regarding the potential of staying in Toronto.
O'Reilly made it very clear that he would like to stay in Toronto, and it is possible that he does stay given the cap space the Leafs currently have ($9M) and could potentially have upwards of $19M if they place Jake Muzzin on LTIR and move on from Matt Murray.
While Leaf fans are hopeful Brad Treliving can find a way to keep O'Reilly, there is also some talk about him returning to St. Louis, so that remains a possibility as well.
