Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald has a tough conversation with P.K Subban about his future in NJ
The New Jersey Devils are well outside of the playoff picture at this point, and with the trade deadline looming, GM Tom Fitzgerald has some big decisions to make in terms of who will stay and who will go before March 21st. With this in mind, Fitzgerald had a difficult conversation with pending UFA P.K. Subban this weekend. Here's what he told The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun.
"I sat down with P.K. [Saturday] and we talked about uncertainty and the deadline and that we're not at a spot where we're looking to extend him at this point. But I told him, 'On the last day, somebody may lose a right-shot D and may call me and if the move makes sense for the New Jersey Devils and makes sense for you to potentially have a chance to win, I have to do what's best for the organization'."
In terms of who might be interested in his players, including Subban, Fitzgerald revealed that there hasn't exactly been a lineup of teams breaking down the door to talk to him. It's kind of difficult to be a seller if nobody wants to buy what you're selling.
"It's been really quiet, to be quite honest, lately. It's been extremely quiet. But I still make my calls and just check in with teams and see if things have changed from what they were thinking."

It's probably safe to suggest that any team who might be interested in Subban would only be interested if there is double salary retention, which means involving a third team, which means giving up an extra asset. Is the juice really worth the squeeze there? It'll be interesting to see what happens with Subban at the deadline and in the offseason.
