Don Cherry responds to former Hometown Hockey's Tara Slone slamming him on social media
Last week, former Coach's Corner host Don Cherry came under fire from former Hometown Hockey co-host Tara Slone, with Slone calling him a "bigot" and downplaying his contributions to the sport over the years. Naturally, Cherry caught wind of the tirade and has had a chance to respond.
As far as the original comments go, here's some of what Slone had to say about Cherry, who has since moved on to podcasting, running "The Don Cherry's Grapevine Podcast".
I like(d) Don as a person, because like many of us, he wasn't just one thing. But I loathed his perspective, more and more as the years went by.
He sort of tolerated Hometown Hockey but was jealous of Ron's other job/co-host. He thought we were soft and woke and focussed on too much outside of hockey. HTH wasn't for everyone, so that didn't bother me.
He had some good points, probably, once upon a time. He has tons of charisma, which is why he stayed on air for so long. But this incessant and nostalgic elevating of Don as some figure who we should look to as a hockey and political leader? Come ON.
I like him, I really do. I hope he is healthy and doing well. But he is a bigot and had no place on national television with a national platform. It wasn't the poppy incident, it was everything he proclaimed over 3 decades. Come. On. Stop with the deification.
Slone on Cherry
Cherry was probably content enough with his career to leave well enough alone, but the public response to the Slone rant likely led to the long-time HNIC staple speaking his mind on the matter. Cherry touched on the matter via the Toronto Sun.
She was just trying to get some publicity and got her picture in the paper. I don't mind. Now I know who she is.

Grapes does not appear bothered by the ordeal, nor has it seemed to impact his following in any way, shape or form. I can't imagine that this thing will drag out any further than it has, but I suppose we'll only know that for sure if Slone does not press Cherry further. They've both had their say and I'd be willing to bet that the animosity here just dissipates over time.
