Disaster struck at Leafs morning skate on Saturday when Matt Murray went down with a suspected groin injury. The Leafs, having no cap space and no contract slots left available, were dealing with the prospect of signing a local goalie to an Amateur Tryout contract in order to have a backup on the bench.

It appears that won't be necessary, as Erik Källgren has been recalled from the Toronto Marlies to play backup for Ilya Samsonov tonight. The bad news: the Leafs don't have the cap space to call him up unless another player is added to LTIR.

It was unclear whether or not Källgren would be able to play at all tonight. He was run over while playing for the Marlies last night and left the game immediately. He was just barely cleared in time to play for the Leafs tonight. As for Murray, you have to feel for the guy. An excellent pre-season had Leafs fans excited to see him return to form this season, now he will have to be out of the lineup for a minimum of 10 games in order to be eligible for LTIR.

The silver lining here is that the Leafs will have some extra flexibility over the next week and a half. We could see Nick Robertson called up, as well as other reinforcements for the Leafs' Western road trip. It looks like, for the time being, the Leafs' hopes will lie with Samsonov and Kallgren between the pipes. After Samsonov's performance on Thursday, I'd say the Leafs are still in good hands.
