To say the Leafs are a cursed team isn't all that far-fetched. Going all the way back to the Ballard years, the Leafs have had bad ownerships and some brutal management, but above all else, they've had horrific luck. If you believe in curses, it's easy to see why some believe the Leafs have been cursed.
Just last week, Auston Matthews was on the mound at the Rogers Centre to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. After the Jays' spectacular collapse, some fans are theorizing that when Matthews threw that ball, he threw the Leafs playoff curse with it. Now I'm not superstitious, but let's look at the evidence.
First, Matthews threw the ball to Jays ace Alek Manoah. Manoah went on to have a brutal performance in Game 1 of the series compared to his usual standard. Second, the Jays mascot wouldn't let Matthews throw from the mound, instead having him throw the ball from in front of it. The Jays epic collapse began with taking Kevin Gausman off the mound. Coincidence? I think not.
Of course, the good news is that if this so called curse was transferred to the Jays, we should finally see the Leafs go somewhere in the playoffs. Maybe, just maybe, the Jays had to fall in order for the Leafs to rise. As a fan of both teams, that's how I'm choosing to cope with the loss anyway.
Can we please start the regular season now?
