Prior to the start of the season, the NHL clarified its stance on special event nights and even forbid players from using Pride tape to show their support for the LGBTQ+ community. Since the ban was put into effect, however, there have been a number of outspoken players that have said they don't care what the new mandate says. One being the Flyers' Scott Laughton, who said he would probably still use the tape.

Arizona Coyotes defenseman and former Leaf Travis Dermott took Laughton's comments one step further on Saturday night as he had the bottom of the handle on his stick wrapped in Pride Tape. The use of the tape may come with some punishment from the NHL as once they were made aware of Dermott's use of the tape, the NHL released a statement to The Athletic.

"We will review it in due course."

The NHL didn't elaborate further whether that means Dermott will be fined or suspended, but likely means he will face some sort of supplemental discipline.

Regardless of if Dermott faces supplemental discipline, it would appear that it won't stop him from showing his support as he placed an order with a company called Pride Tape last week to which the co-owner responded publicly too.

"It means everything. It's so incredibly powerful."

Should the NHL choose to suspend or fine Dermott for his use of the tape, it would have to speak to its social media team as they commented on Dermott's Instagram post back in February when he posted his support for the community. While the ban is new, those enforcing the ban do not run the social media account for the league. Those running the account likely have a very different view point and may continue to support the cause on social media.
