Recently, he's been posting some of his on ice workouts and has not been shy about getting back into shape in the hope that it leads to a Professional Tryout Offer. With goalie injuries rising sharply the past few years, consistency has been hard to come by for many teams. The Leafs, for example, may have posted their best season record ever, but they did it with sub .900 goaltending through most of the season (except November when Jack Campbell went into God Mode).
In his 13 year NHL career as a back up option, McElhinney posted the best numbers of his career in Toronto. He posted a .934 Save% and a 2.14 GAA over 18 games in 2017-18.
Despite never becoming a full time starter, Mac is known for being well liked by anyone he plays with, and being an excellent mentor to younger star goalies. For the right organization (a team with a legitimate starter), McElhinney could be an excellent value add on any team counting their pennies.
