After spending a season coaching college hockey for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, it was announced on Thursday that former Leafs head coach Mike Babcock had resigned from his position with the Huskies, with assistant coach Brandin Cote taking over head coaching duties.

Babcock, who was fired by the Leafs during the 2019-20 season, gave Cote a strong vote of confidence and believes he's the right man for the job in Saskatchewan.

"I'm excited for Brandin and his family. He is prepared to be a highly successful coach. I believe he will elevate the Huskies play and profile even further. I look forward to seeing him continue down the path of what promises to be an incredible career."

What this means for Babcock's immediate future is unclear. Is the veteran coach eyeing a return to the NHL? He could be on a short list of coaches who could step in and take over a team on an interim basis if an NHL team is looking to make a change part-way through the season.
