Former first round pick claimed off of waivers
Eeli Tolvanen was once regarded as a steal when the Nashville Predators drafted him 30th overall in the 2017 draft. Unfortunately, his game has not translated well to North American ice. Although he began to open some eyes during the 2020/21 season, when he registered 22 points (11-11) in 40 games for the Preds, he failed to build on that success. The following season, he only registered 23 points in 75 games, and so far this season, he has just 4 points in 13 games while being in and out of the lineup.
Yesterday, the Preds surprisingly placed Tolvanen on waivers and this afternoon the Seattle Kraken claimed him. Tolvanen has this season and next remaining on his 3-year deal he signed in August 2021. The deal carries a cap hit of $1.45M per season.
Maybe a change of scenery will help Tolvanen rediscover his scoring touch, or at least evolve into a useful bottom six forward with some offensive upside. That will only happen though if he decides to take advantage of the opportunity - something he failed to do in Nashville.
