When the Leafs had originally acquired Hutton from the Arizona Coyotes back in February, it was believed that the idea was to have Hutton remain in Arizona, on loan to the Tucson Roadrunners. The expectation was that he was brought in specifically for insurance in the playoffs.
On Wednesday, a few eyebrows were raised when Hutton was listed among the scratches for the AHL's Toronto Marlies. With the AHL season currently winding down, the Marlies are closer to a playoff spot than the Roadrunners. Perhaps Hutton and the Leafs' management group reached an agreement where he'll get a look with the Marlies and an opportunity to be their number one in the AHL playoffs. Maybe, though, there is a greater opportunity ahead for Hutton.
Despite lackluster numbers in the NHL over the past three seasons, Hutton provides the Leafs with another viable option in net. Starting with the Marlies as Erik Kallgren is up with the Leafs and Joseph Woll out with an injury could provide Hutton with a bit of a springboard to jump back into the NHL. He has shown in the past to be a more than capable NHL goaltender, particularly during his time with the St. Louis Blues from 2016-2018.
Definitely an interesting development to say the least - especially with Kallgren's injury scare on Tuesday in Florida and the Leafs' already thin stable of goaltenders on the depth chart.
