This is a tough break for Jarnkrok, who had just been promoted to the team's second line. He had spent the bulk of the season playing on the third line but was recently given an opportunity to play beside the red-hot Mitch Marner and team captain John Tavares.
Jarnkrok was signed to a four-year contract worth $8.4 million ($2.1 million AAV) this past offseason. The 31-year-old is known as a strong defensive forward, who can move up and down the lineup as needed. His career high in points came in the 2017-18 season, when he produced 35 (16 goals & 19 assists) in 68 games.
Jarnkrok was originally drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the second round (51st overall) of the 2010 NHL entry draft. On the 2014 NHL trade deadline day, he was traded to the Nashville Predators in a deal that sent former Preds captain David Legwand back the other way. He made his NHL debut later that season for Nashville. He spent the following seven seasons with the Predators, until being claimed by Seattle at the 2021 NHL expansion draft. Seattle then traded him to the Flames last season on trade deadline day for three draft picks, before he entered unrestricted free agency this past offseason.
