The report came out on Saturday night, as Elliotte Friedman had broken the news that Keefe, the Leafs and new GM Brad Treliving have gotten together at least twice since Treliving was named the 18th GM in franchise history this past Thursday. Here's what he had to say:
Treliving has made good, thus far, on not just coming in and cleaning house. From the very beginning, Treliving acknowledged how many great people that the Leafs had in place and also stated that he was committed to meeting with everyone to try to get to know them a little bit before any decisions are made. Treliving was also complimentary of Keefe during his introductory presser, stating that he felt that Keefe was a good head coach and the two sides would have to get together before any decisions were made. Well, as it turns out, those decisions might involve Keefe sticking around longer than expected.
It can be tough for a coach to feel confident heading into the final year of his deal without an extension in place, so perhaps this is Treliving's way of trying to set Keefe up for success and build his confidence for what will be an important season rather than allowing him to enter the year walking on egg shells.
