With July 1st fast approaching, it seemed like Schenn would be hitting the open market, however that may not be the case. On Insider Trading today, Pierre LeBrun reported that Treliving and Schenn's camp continue to have discussions about an extension for the 33-year-old, former fifth overall pick.
Schenn was acquired by Kyle Dubas for a third round pick and played well above what anyone expected. When he was acquired, he was supposed to be brought in to solidify the third pair, but instead ended up playing on the top pair with Morgan Rielly at the end of the season and throughout the playoffs. Playing with Schenn, we saw the best hockey Rielly has played in a Leafs uniform in the playoffs as Schenn provided stability, reliability and a physical presence to allow Rielly to play a more offensive game.
Had Schenn not vaulted himself onto the top pair, a new deal would have been much cheaper for the Leafs. Now, however, it will likely cost the Leafs up to $2M per season to retain Schenn's services. Although July 1st is just over 48 hours away, there is a good chance we see Schenn back in blue and white next season as the two sides remain focused on hammering out a deal.
