The Leafs enter the season with Timothy Liljegren, Carl Dahlstrom and Jamie Benn on injured reserve, with all three set to miss significant time. With the three of them out of action, the Leafs' defensive depth has become somewhat of a question mark.

Sure, there is Victor Mete with the Marlies, but after him, options are inexperienced and slim with Mac Hollowell and Fillip Kral being the next likely call-ups. Elliotte Friedman reported in his most recent 32 Thoughts that the Leafs are still looking at waiver-cleared and waiver-exempt blueliners due to the slew of injuries above. Unfortunately, the Leafs are at the maximum 50 contracts which means they have to move one or two contracts to acquire another.

With an abundance of depth forwards (for now) the Leafs' best option is to move one for defensive depth and the likely candidate after clearing waivers is Wayne Simmonds. The Leafs have to make a move or two in the next month as once Liljegren returns they will be over the cap, so it will be interesting to see how Dubas handles the situation.
