The Toronto Maple Leafs have unsurprisingly been linked to the Yotes blueliner recently, more so after the injury to Jake Muzzin. It was reported earlier from Nick Kypreos that the Coyotes informed the Leafs and the Ottawa Senators that a package surrounding a prospect and the equivalent of 2 first round picks can get it done. The Leafs would have to dump some salary, maybe in the form of Alex Kerfoot, but the acquisition of Chychrun would be massive.
However, things haven't materialized because of an injury that Chychrun sustained last season. He is coming off of offseason wrist surgery and it was announced today that he suffered a set-back that has changed his status to week-to-week.
Chychrun, who was drafted 16th overall in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, has 53 goals and 142 points in 337 games but is coming off the last 2 seasons where he scored 25 goals and 62 points in only 103 games - including an 18-goal campaign in 2020-21.
He has dealt with his fair share of injuries in the past, including surgery on both of his knees, shoulder, ankle, and a few on his wrists, without mentioning a concussion he has also suffered in his young career. The roadblock right now is his return from his current wrist injury. He missed all of training camp, hasn't suited up this season and will now miss a significant amount of time due to his recent setback.
Upon his return, expect trade talks to heat up once more as every team in the NHL would be interested in acquiring a 24-year-old defenseman with his skill set.
