Woll played 7 games last season and looked impressive, even earning a starting opportunity in the playoffs against Florida over the veteran Matt Murray. His play last year earned him the backup spot this year, and now he's pushing to become a starter. In four games so far this year, Woll is 3-1 with an incredible 1.33 GAA and .961 save percentage.
MoneyPuck has released its list of top NHL goaltenders on Sunday and, wouldn't you know it, Joseph Woll sits atop the list. Among the biggest reasons why is his league-leading 8.6 Goals Saved Above Expected.
Obviously, it's still very early on in the season, and with Woll having just 4 games under his belt, a lot can change by the end of the season. His start has been very encouraging, but we should probably temper our expectations some, given that the 25-year-old has just 15 NHL starts under his belt. He's certainly not going to end the year with a .961 SV% or a 1.33 GAA, but if he can keep a level head and continue to play well in the starts he's given by Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe, it's not unreasonable to think that he could be in the conversation for a Vezina Trophy in his first full NHL season.
