Joseph Woll reacts to being compared to Carey Price
This weekend, after the Leafs completed an unlikely 3rd period comeback against the Tampa Bay Lightning, erasing a 2-goal deficit to tie the game at 3-3, Joseph Woll made quite arguably the save of his career in the final 14 seconds of to rob Nikita Kucherov in tight to ensure that the Leafs would force overtime in Tampa. The Leafs ended up winning the game in extra time, thanks to William Nylander and John Tavares, who connected on the game-winning goal.
Joseph Woll was the unsung hero in the game, stopping all 29 shots he had faced, but it was Matthew Knies who got the Leafs belt and all of the glory on the heels of a 2-goal performance.
Following the game, Max Domi, who assisted on both of Knies' 3rd period goals, spoke with the media and compared Woll to one of the best goaltenders in the NHL over this era in Carey Price. Domi, who played with Price for a pair of seasons in 2018-19 and 2019-20, knows a thing or two about how good Price truly is. When Woll caught wind of Domi comparing him to Price, he had this to say:
He's so good technically. At the same time, he can play athletic, plays pretty free. But he's also very stoic. And that's my aim as a goalie � to be the same way as him." - Woll on Domi comparing him to Carey Price
Woll has a long way to go to live up to that comparison. Price is a former Vezina Trophy and Hart Trophy winner. He's won several additional awards and is also an Olympic gold medalist, but you don't have to tell Woll any of this, as he grew up idolizing Price.
Woll will get right back into the net tonight for the Leafs in just his 2nd start of the season. Through his first 2 appearances so far, Woll has amassed a 1-1-0 record with a 1.67 GAA and a .947 SV%. Here's hoping he can keep up the solid play as the Leafs look to string a few wins together on their current 5-game road trip.
