Just when we thought the tides were turning and the Leafs might be heading for treacherous waters with RFA Pierre Engvall, the Buds announced via Twitter that they have officially locked Engvall up to a one-year, $2.25 million contract.

This season Engvall played in 78 games recording 35 points picking up 15 goals and 20 assists. He was adequate for the Leafs on their third/fourth lines by using his speed to his advantage. This deal allows both sides to spare themselves a potentially messy salary arbitration case.

The 26-year-old Swede has been with the Maple Leafs since 2014 after being drafted by the club in the 7th round. With Engvall locked up, all the Leafs have to do is sign their last RFA, Rasmus Sandin and potentially land one more piece, presumably a top six winger to play with Tavares and Nylander.

A trade looks like it will be coming sometime soon with Sandin needing an extension, but the Leafs don't have that much cap space, so a body will have to go out in order to allow the Buds to put the finishing touches on the 2022-23 roster.
