Keefe setting the tone early at Leafs training camp
I'll never forget my first day of PeeWee hockey try outs. We were all fresh and excited after a summer off, but the second we stepped on the ice, we were put on the goal line and skated until we could barely breathe. I hated my coach for it, but that was the one year we made it all the way to the OMHA Finals. Sheldon Keefe started Leafs training camp today in the same manner.
Keefe's detractors have accused him of being a soft coach selected by a soft GM. Now, anyone that saw Keefe in his playing days knows he's anything but soft. Even if you didn't get a chance to see him play, a quick run through of the Amazon Prime All or Nothing: Toronto Maple Leafs series gives you a pretty good idea about the type of coach Keefe is.
Thursday's morning skate saw Keefe open the on ice sessions by bag skating both regulars and hopefuls to kick things off. Keefe is looking to set the tone early this season and let everyone know what he expects from this team. Keefe seems to know that there is a time to have fun and relax a bit and there's a time for hard work. The Leafs came out of the gate slow last season, so it looks like Keefe is doing what he can to make sure that doesn't happen again.
