Wright would sit in the crowd and look on with great concern and embarrassment when he was passed over twice more before finally landing in Seattle. There was a lot of speculation over how soon the Kraken would be able to count on Wright as an everyday NHLer, and as it turned out, he just wasn't quite ready last year, bouncing around between the NHL, AHL and the OHL. This year, he received an exception from the NHL to be able to play in the AHL as a 19-year-old in the event that he did not make the Kraken out of training camp. As fate would have it, applying for the exception was the right call by the Kraken.
The Kraken made waves on Saturday afternoon when they announced that they would be sending Wright down to Coachella Valley.
The move will allow the Kraken to recall him at any point in time if/when he shows the team that he's ready to make the jump to the NHL. Had he not received the exemption, if the Kraken had sent him down to his OHL club, they would not be able to recall him until the end of his OHL season.
Wright played 8 games for Coachella Valley last season in the AHL, racking up 6 points and looking very good on his limited stretch there. With his AHL assignment on Saturday, the Kraken are expecting a motivated Wright to head back to Coachella Valley and dominate his minutes with the Firebirds. Once he shows that he can dominate in the AHL, I fully expect that we'll see him back up with the Kraken to resume his NHL career, hopefully never looking back.
