Nylander is currently in the final year of a 6-year deal he signed in December of 2018 that will see him earn $6.96M for the season. His current deal was signed at the eleventh hour on December 1st, while he was still an RFA, after a lengthy and tense negotiation process that did not involve in-season negotiations prior.
Throughout the summer, reports have indicated that the Leafs are more comfortable signing Nylander long-term under the $9M AAV threshold, while the Nylander camp is reportedly seeking somewhere between $10M and $10.5M per season. Both sides seem intent on reaching a long-term deal, so something in the 3-5 year range seems unlikely.
The 27-year-old is coming off of a career-best season which saw him crack the 40-goal mark for the first time along with 87 points.
