Last week, reports had surfaced that William Nylander gave his agent, Lewis Gross, permission to continue to negotiate a contract extension with the Leafs throughout the season on the condition that he would not be privy to any of those conversations until they had a deal in place. Today on TSN1050's First Up, Leafs GM Brad Treliving addressed those rumours.

"We want to extend Willy, I've had lots of talks with Willy. He loves Toronto, the city, the people, but we're not going to talk about it publicly. Our focus is going to be on the ice and we'll continue to work in the background on the business side. We'll keep plugging away. We're not going to do a daily update. Hopefully we can get to a point where we've got good news and were hopeful he will be with us for a long time." - Treliving on where things currently stand with Nylander

Nylander is currently in the final year of a 6-year deal he signed in December of 2018 that will see him earn $6.96M for the season. His current deal was signed at the eleventh hour on December 1st, while he was still an RFA, after a lengthy and tense negotiation process that did not involve in-season negotiations prior.

Throughout the summer, reports have indicated that the Leafs are more comfortable signing Nylander long-term under the $9M AAV threshold, while the Nylander camp is reportedly seeking somewhere between $10M and $10.5M per season. Both sides seem intent on reaching a long-term deal, so something in the 3-5 year range seems unlikely.

The 27-year-old is coming off of a career-best season which saw him crack the 40-goal mark for the first time along with 87 points.
