The Leafs still have some boxes that remain unchecked ahead of Friday's trade deadline, which makes Saturday evening's news all the more interesting. Rumour has it that Kyle Dubas attended the University of Minnesota vs Ohio State game to take in Matthew Knies' final game of the NCAA regular season. He was not the only NHL GM present, however, as Minnesota Wild GM Bill Guerin was also reportedly in the building.

Knies had himself a solid night, racking up 8 shots on goal, notching one goal and one assist to go along with 7 penalty minutes. His goal was yet another net-front goal as he drove to the paint to clean up the trash. His assist, however, was of a highlight reel variety, with a nice little one touch pass between the legs.

There are some who have begun to speculate that Guerin and Dubas were in the building to discuss a deal that might involve Knies, who just finished his season with 21 goals and 39 points in 34 games. I'm not necessarily sure I agree. The Wild are currently in a playoff spot and are not one of the teams who have been identified as sellers. I think a more accurate hypothesis is that Dubas and Guerin may have been discussing the idea of having the Wild retain some salary on another player as a 3rd party broker, much like what they've already done with Ryan O'Reilly. I suppose we'll know for sure one way or the other this coming week.
