Leafs Lunch radio hosts debate the first Leafs UFA Treliving needs to re-sign
Yesterday, Julia Tocheri and Michael Distefano, the co-hosts of Leafs Lunch, debated about the 12 unrestricted free agents the Leafs currently have. They discussed who should be the Leafs' top priority of the 12 to re-sign and they came to a consensus fairly quickly.
Both of them had Ryan O'Reilly as their top UFA priority and from what O'Reilly said on OverDrive this week, there seems to be a mutual interest of returning.
"If he can remain healthy, he can be a big part of this team moving forward," said Distefano. This decision would be an impactful one because it would allow the Leafs to shift the slower John Tavares to the wing where he looked surprisingly good in his short stints at the end of the regular season.
The Leafs have the cap space to bring O'Reilly back, it's just a matter of how much that will cost. Evolving Hockey predicts O'Reilly will get somewhere between $4.7M and $5.5M depending on the length of the deal he signs however anything over 3 years and the Leafs should walk away as the last few years of that deal could impede the team.
