Hutton has played in only three games this season for the Coyotes before suffering an injury. He is 0-2 with a miserable .776 save percentage. Hutton is not going to come in and battle for the backup role for the Leafs without first going in a run in the AHL. What he will do is add veteran experience and can be a mentor to Joseph Woll with the Marlies.
Hutton is from Thunder Bay, Ontario and the deal allows for him to play closer to home and provides more goaltending depth to the Leafs. The Leafs now have a logjam in net behind Campbell and Mrazek. Erik Kallgren, Joseph Woll, Michael Hutchison, and now Carter Hutton are all AHL goalies who can play in the NHL in a pinch. Perhaps the Leafs move a goalie in order to add more depth at another position.
The Hutton trade doesn't move the needle much for the Leafs but it provides more goaltending depth. Something that is important to any team, especially with the playoffs approaching.
