The Leafs are having their depth tested before the season even gets under way. On Tuesday, the Buds have added another player to the injury list and, unfortunately, it's a heavyweight. Per the Leafs, captain John Tavares is dealing with an upper-body injury and has been listed as day-to-day.

Tavares had reportedly had a very good summer and was able to train this offseason without the limits that prevented him from putting forth a maximum effort last summer. The 32-year-old had revealed that he had put an emphasis on coming into this season faster and stronger.

The Leafs didn't reveal any of the specifics of Tavares' injury, but anytime you see the words «upper-body injury» in relation to someone who has suffered a concussion, there is some valid concern there. Tavares played Saturday afternoon against the Ottawa Senators and practiced on Monday, so whatever it is that's ailing him happened either during Saturday's game or Monday's practice.

Tavares joins Pierre Engvall, Timothy Liljegren, Jake Muzzin and Adam Gaudette on the sidelines. So much for starting the season healthy. As always, we'll provide updates as they become available.
